When Should You Replace Your Waterproof Jacket?

A robust waterproof jacket is required for any outdoor activity.

The primary function of a waterproof jacket is to keep you dry when the weather becomes bad. However, as part of an effective layering system, it should be breathable and keep you warm.

Waterproof jackets are extremely well-made these days, thanks to years of study and development. However, like everything else in life, they don't survive forever and will eventually succumb to the rigours of the outdoors.

You may see symptoms that your waterproof coat or jacket is nearing the end of its useful life, but there are ways to extend its lifespan.

Is it time to replace your waterproof jacket, or can you bring it back to life? Continue reading to discover out...

Cleaning your water-resistant jacket

If your waterproof jacket is no longer operating as well as it once did, the first thing you should attempt is washing it.

Mud, filth, and general grime (such as fumes from vehicle exhausts) can accumulate on the outside and lining of your jacket over time. This can reduce its waterproofing characteristics by eroding the DWR.

Sweat, oils from your skin, and other beautiful things can also impair the permeability of the jacket, generating a build-up on the permeable membrane. Washing your jacket will help eliminate any unpleasantness and restore its waterproof and breathable properties.

Always wash your waterproof jacket according to the label's directions, and use a cleaner if necessary.

Reproofing your water-resistant jacket

You may have an issue if your waterproof jacket begins to absorb water.

Water should bead on the surface and roll off ideally, thanks to the durable water repellent (DWR) added to the fabrics. However, the DWR will begin to deteriorate over time.

This could be caused to pack friction, additional equipment, or simply the passage of time. Either way, if the proofing starts to wear away, your jacket will absorb the water and get 'wetted out'.

If the water doesn't bead off your jacket or it feels more heavier (or clinging!) while wet, it may need to be reproofed. This can be accomplished with a reproofing spray or a wash-in proofer, which is applied in the washing machine.

Making repairs to your waterproof jacket

Water will obviously come in if you have a hole or rip in your waterproof garment. You may believe that any tear means imminent disaster for your jacket, but this is not always the case.

If the hole is large, or the arm has come off, or something similar, you'll probably need a new jacket, but if it's only a minor rip, you might be able to fix it.

Repairing a jacket using tape is the simplest approach to restore its waterproof characteristics. Seek expert repairs if there is a major tear or if the taping along the seam has failed.

Repairing a jacket using tape is the simplest approach to restore its waterproof characteristics. Seek expert repairs if there is a major tear or if the taping along the seam has failed.

You must clean and dry the area around the tear before taping it. Smooth out your waterproof jacket on a hard, level surface.

Then, wrap your tape around the hole to determine how much you'll need to cut. We recommend cutting a circular piece to guarantee no edges may be easily pulled or peeled off. It's ideal to allow up to 2.5cm of additional tape around the tear.

Remove the back layer of the tape and apply it to the tear. Smooth the fabric and remove any air bubbles by pressing from the centre of the tape out.

After you've completed any repairs, reproof your jacket, especially if you've repaired any seams.

WHERE CAN I GET A NEW WATERPROOF JACKET?

If all else fails and your jacket is beyond repair, it may be time to invest in a new one. There are several to select from, with a variety of features and technology to assist you in combating the elements.

So, which waterproof jacket should you get? Which features are appropriate for you?

Consider what you'll be using it for most of the time to help you decide. If you're undertaking severe hill walking, for example, you might want a reinforced hood, storm flaps, and pockets for extra storage.

Alternatively, if you're a climber, you might want to select a more durable waterproof jacket. For instance, a jacket with a more relaxed fit (for comfort) with adjustable cuffs and hems.
