HOW TO SELECT A PUFFER JACKET

Puffer coats are a wardrobe essential. They feel like a large, warm hug while remaining lightweight and packable. But how do you go about finding the ideal one? While all of our puffer coats will keep you warm, the perfect one for you will depend on how you want to use it.

For the frequent travelers and hikers out there, a lightweight puffer jacket will keep you warm when you need it and pack up tiny when you don't. A mid-weight puffer is a classic for a reason if you want a jacket for everyday wear during the winter.

OUR SELECTION

The Heli series was created to provide maximum warmth while taking up the least amount of space in your suitcase. These lightweight puffers are excellent for travel or keeping in your hiking pack.

Our traditional mid-weight puffer coats are ideal for everyday wear, from chilly commutes to winter weekend activities.

WATERPROOFING & WATER-RESISTANCE

All of our down jackets and vests are made with recycled shell materials that have been treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) treatment to assist bead water in light drizzle. However, in wet weather, you must have a suitable rain jacket to protect yourself. When feather down gets wet, it loses its ability to insulate (and once wet, it might take a long time to dry). If you believe your puffer jacket will get wet frequently, consider a synthetic down jacket instead.

SYNTHETIC DOWN VS DOWN

Even when wet, synthetic down keeps you warm and dries faster than feather down. However, in extreme cold, it cannot match with feather down in terms of insulating value and warmth-to-weight ratio. Our synthetic down is composed entirely of recycled polyester.

DOWN FILL POWER & WARMTH

Down keeps you warm by absorbing your body heat and prevents it from escaping into the cold air around you. 'Fill power' is a measure of down fill performance. The numbers 550, 600, and 650, for example, refer to the quality of the fill, not the quantity of fill in the down jacket, as is generally assumed.

The number of cubic inches that one ounce of down occupies in a climate-controlled test cylinder is used to calculate fill power. The higher the volume occupied by the down, the more air trapped and the greater the insulation generated.

SELECTING YOUR DOWN JACKET WEIGHT

Fill weight refers to the amount of down in your gear, whereas fill power refers to the quality of the feathers.

Lightweight down coats are more compressible and ideal for traveling. Heavy down jackets, on the other hand, are ideal for cold conditions when you are not exerting energy, such as applauding on the sidelines of a winter sport.

With the technical information in hand, it's typically a matter of comparing pricing, color, and fit to discover the perfect match. The choice is now yours; browse our selection of puffer coats and see what appeals to you.
